Some time has passed and Joseph, the youngest of Jacob (Israel's) sons, is now seventeen years old. Joseph was his father's favorite son and the rest of his brothers were very aware of this. One day, Jacob gave Joseph a very beautiful, colorful coat, which caused his brothers to be jealous. Joseph also went to check on his brothers when they were out with the sheep and he tattled on them when they weren't working.
One night, Joseph had a dream, where his bundle of wheat was standing tall, while the wheat of his brothers bowed down to him. He also had another dream where he was a star and the sun, moon and ten other stars all bowed down to him. God was revealing to Joseph what His plan was. However, Joseph talked about this to his brothers and this only made them more angry at him.
One day, as Joseph was coming to supervise his brothers, they began to plot against him. When he arrived, they took his coat away and threw him into a well. While they were trying to decide what to do with him, an Ishmaelite trader, who was going to Egypt, came by and they decided to sell Joseph to the trader. Then they put blood on the colorful coat and showed it to Jacob, who became convinced Joseph had been killed by a wild animal.
God had showed Joseph His plan. But then, because his brothers hated him, they sold him into slavery, and it seemed like God's plan was ruined. But God is actually big enough to let people do bad things, because God's plans will always be fulfilled, no matter what other people do. Even though right now, it looks like there's no way Joseph will ever be in charge of his family, God can still make his plan happen, despite how bad things are right now.
