We saw a few weeks ago that God told Abram to take his wife and leave for Canaan. Abram was supposed to leave the rest of his family behind, but Abram didn't fully trust God and brought his nephew Lot with him. This wasn't at all what God wanted and this week, we saw how God dealt with the situation.
Lot and Abram's servants were constantly having squabbles over what belonged to which family. Sheep, wells, everything was becoming a point of conflict. So Abram and Lot talked together and Abram said it would be better if their families went their seperate ways. Abram gave Lot the first pick of which section of land to take; the lush, plentiful area near Sodom and Gemorah, or the dry desert plain. Lot, of course, picked the lush area.
After Lot and his family had moved away, God came to talk with Abram. Abram said that everything would be so hard and now that his family had moved away, he was alone. But God said that this was perfect; everything that Abram depended on was gone. God wanted to be the only One that Abram depended on and Abram was now ready to walk more closely with God. God assured Abram that He was taking care of him and that this whole land was for him.
We learned that God will take away anything we are depending on so that we depend on Him alone. God loves us and wants us to trust only Him.
