We did things differently this Sunday, as we're always trying to find new ways to reach the kids and engage with them. The whole program was a gameshow, "The Sin is Right", and the children were the contestants. As the gameshow host, Boris Bergergus, explained, the contestants would see various scenarios and would have to say whether the character sinned or didn't sin.
First, however, Boris called up the resident expert on sin, The Flesh. The Flesh was very flashy and proud, convinced that everyone loved her. Boris asked what exactly sin was, and The Flesh explained that she is in the hearts of everyone on earth, and everyone has a choice; let the Flesh be in charge or Jesus. Anytime someone does something with The Flesh in charge, that is sin. The kids were quite puzzled by this and a few said that The Flesh didn't live inside them. One child said they thought sin was doing bad stuff, but The Flesh explained that she could act good and do good things too, but it was still sin.
Sin is anything we do while depending on ourselves, and not on Jesus.
The bible story was that of Adam and Eve, and the forbidden fruit. Satan insisted they should eat the fruit because it would make them like God, without needing God. Eve finally ate the fruit, and then gave some to Adam, and then they realized they'd made a mistake. God had to kick them out of the garden of Eden.
A few more scenarios followed after that, and each new batch of contestants guessed correctly. We hope that the kids grasped that sin goes beyond doing bad things. We hope you can have some good conversations with them this week.
