This week, we talked about the story of David and Bathsheba. David had been king of Israel for awhile now and he sent his army off to war, but instead of going along, the way he was supposed to, he stayed home. One day, he saw a beautiful woman named Bathsheba and wanted to marry her, but she was already married to a man in David's army. So David came up with a terrible plan, which ended up killing Bathsheba's husband, and David married her. God sent a prophet named Nathan and made David realize what a terrible thing he'd done, and so David wrote Psalm 51 as a response.
We asked the kids where the sin came from. Though it seemed like it came from David getting Bathsheba's husband killed, or from marrying Bathsheba, it actually came right at the start, when David decided in his heart that he wanted to stay home, instead of going to fight with the army like he was supposed to. Sin is a heart problem. It doesn't come from the things we do. To fix it, we need to go to God, because we can't actually fix it ourselves. We can try to stop doing bad things or start doing good things but sin is a heart problem, and so the heart is what needs to be dealt with. God is the one who deals with our hearts.
To show this in a different way, we had another skit about the heart doctor. One patient came in, trying to stop doing a bad thing by countering it with a lot of good things. Then King David came in and ran right to the doctor (who is actually God) and begged the doctor to make his heart clean. When we have a heart problem (sin), we need to go right to God so He can deal with our hearts.
